[edit] Starting Points for Planning

This page covers the ideas and outlines for track 2 on FOSS migration. You are encouraged to add your own ideas and notes here. The updated agenda for each page can be found here: Migrating to F/OSS Agenda.

The notes on this page are based on material from Asia Source II.

[edit] Framing Questions for Track Planning

Intended Audience: Who are you planning this track curriculum for? What assumptions are you making about skills and knowledge?

This track is for people who would like to engage NGO's and SME's on utilizing FOSS solutions in their work. The only assumptions we are making about skills and knowledge is that participants in this track will be willing to share their skill and knowledge with the other participants.

We expect the audience will broadly cover two categories, technically inclined and non-technical.

Since both the facilitators are geeks, their initial plan will have a stronger emphasis on technology, but this should even out to cover non-technical topics as participants get more involved.

Track Goals: What new skills/abilities will each participant leave the camp having attained?

  • Participants walk away with migration plans they can implement when they get home
  • Participants have lots of resources and information to support them in the implementation (and their FOSS use beyond)
  • Participants have been exposed to real-world examples of migration from organizations that are similar to their own
  • Participants have opportunity to gain hands-on skills on installing and configuring FOSS
  • Participants have an understanding of relevant software and distributions to their work
  • Participants will have an understanding of how to find and handle relevant information (content) to their situation.

Intermediate Milestones: What are the incremental skills/knowledge each participants will acquire to reach the track goals?

  • The ability to teach others the skills they have in FOSS
  • The ability to make others comfortable with using FOSS
  • The ability to utilize command line funtions to configure FOSS programs
  • The ability to plan for FOSS migrations, to help NGO's and SME's prioritize migration steps
  • The ability to be resources to themselves and others in finding information on FOSS solutions

[edit] Hardware Requirements

What computers and other hardware are required for successful delivery of this track?

  • Projector
  • A PC lab with networked computers
  • The computers should have at least 512MB RAM, at least 20GB hard disk space. Desirable to have 1GB RAM.

What are the per-participant hardware requirements?

  • Each participant should have access to a computer, with an ideal ratio of two per computer.
  • There should be a switch/access point for participants to connect their personal laptops in case the laptop does not have wireless support or it is not functioning (missing drivers after migration to FOSS, etc)
  • Track CD

Participant CD's will be burned for each track, allowing them to take home a range of software, documentation and other resources. What should be on the CD for this track?

  • A copy of Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Desktop/i386)
  • A selection of eBooks and articles on migration to open-source software
  • OpenOffice.org Documentation

[edit] Notes for Facilitators

For introduction: sequence of names is not going to help. No one will remember much. Instead: pair everyone with someone they don't know and ask them to introduce themselves to each other. 3 minutes. Then, each pair hooks up with another pair they don't know, and each introduces the other. Helps get familiar and also makes up a group of four. [From Gunner]

For each of the four days with breakout groups, one of these four makes their org's migration plan and presents it. [From Dirk]

Explain to participants why we're asking them to do this, so they participate. [From Gunner]
